As vibration amplitudes due to bearing problems are often relatively small when compared to other vibration sources, "threshold-type" alarms that measure "overall" vibration do not usually give adequate warning for impending bearing failure. Instead, "power band-type" alarms, which measure "root mean square" (rms) values, are most often more appropriate as they give a better idea of "vibration defect energy."
